An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a second dwelling on a single-family lot that includes its own kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area. It may be attached or detached from the primary dwelling, but is intended to be “accessory” to the primary dwelling and is typically much smaller in size.
The ADU Ordinance was signed into law in 2015 to encourage its construction to increase the number of affordable rental units and help alleviate the housing shortage on Oahu.
